Pattern instructions
Large openwork tier
Make a magic ring and work 12 dc. (12 sts) Round 2: work 2 dc in every stitch. (24 sts) Round 3: repeat dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch around. (36 sts) Continue 4 openwork rounds, placing 12 evenly spaced increases in each round and finishing with a scalloped edge.
Medium and small tiers
Repeat the same construction, stopping the medium tier after two openwork rounds and the small tier after one. Block all three into shallow cones rather than flat circles.
Garland, star and base
For each tier, crochet a cream chain long enough to wrap once around the cone and work repeating 5-dc scallops along it. Make a five-point gold star, a 10-stitch brown trunk tube, and a 4 in / 10 cm green tassel.
Thread the central cord through the tassel, wooden bead, trunk, largest tier, medium tier, small tier and star. Knot between sections so the tiers stay evenly spaced. Tack each cream garland at four points around its tier.
Assembly and finishing
Lift the ornament by its loop and rotate each tier until the scallops align. Reinforce the cord at the star and below the bead. This decorative item has not been physically load-tested.
Blocking and care
Weave each end through several adjacent stitches. Block with rustproof pins, following the yarn label. Spot clean decorative hardware and reshape the crochet before air drying.
