Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the molasses and eggs to the butter mixture and mix well.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with hot water, and mix until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let the cake cool completely before frosting.

Notes

  • For a spicier cake, increase the amount of ginger and cinnamon.
