Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
- Press the dough into the bottom of a greased 9×9 inch baking pan, ensuring an even layer.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and let cool.
- In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, and sweetened condensed milk over medium heat. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
- Pour the caramel over the cooled shortbread base and spread evenly. Let it set for about 30 minutes.
- Melt the chocolate chips and butter together in a microwave or double boiler until smooth. Pour over the caramel layer and spread evenly.
- Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before cutting into squares.
