Each bite offers a delightful contrast of textures, from the crumbly crust to the creamy caramel and the glossy chocolate, creating a truly indulgent experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Shortbread Base:
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Caramel Layer:
    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
    • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Chocolate Topping:
    • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Press the dough into the bottom of a greased 9×9 inch baking pan, ensuring an even layer.
  5. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and let cool.
  6. In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, and sweetened condensed milk over medium heat. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a boil.
  7. Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  8. Pour the caramel over the cooled shortbread base and spread evenly. Let it set for about 30 minutes.
  9. Melt the chocolate chips and butter together in a microwave or double boiler until smooth. Pour over the caramel layer and spread evenly.
  10. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before cutting into squares.
