Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Angel Food Cake:
    • 1 cup cake flour, sifted
    • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar, divided
    • 12 large egg whites, at room temperature
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the Strawberry Topping:
    • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 2 tablespoons bourbon
  • For the Whipped Cream:
    • 1 cup heavy cream
    • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the cake flour and 3/4 cup of granulated sugar.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites, salt, and cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
  4. Gradually add the remaining sugar while continuing to beat until stiff peaks form.
  5. Gently fold in the flour mixture and vanilla extract until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter into an ungreased angel food cake pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the cake is golden and springs back when touched.
  8. Remove from the oven and invert the pan to cool completely.
  9. While the cake cools, prepare the strawberry topping by mixing sliced strawberries, sugar, and bourbon in a bowl. Let it sit for 15 minutes.
  10. For the whipped cream, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  11. Once the cake is cool, cut it into cupcake-sized pieces and top with the strawberry mixture and whipped cream.
